San Diego State University
James Marshall, Ph.D. is a Professor in the College of Education at San Diego State University and an expert in the evaluation of formal and informal learning programs, and human performance. He brings over 20 years of experience in the learning design and technology field to his teaching and research endeavors. Dr. Marshall has been responsible for evaluating over $50 million dollars worth of funded programs for purposes of optimizing their design, and quantifying their impact. With his start as a zoo educator, he is particularly passionate about informal learning. Marshall regularly consults with zoos, aquariums, museums and libraries to enhance organizational performance, and to optimize the guest experience—including elements of learning and conservation behavior change.
His extensive work with San Diego Zoo Global has informed the design of the organization’s education programs, exhibits, web presence and workforce training—as well as quantified the impact of many initiatives. Additional collaborations with zoo and aquarium clients have successfully measured the impact of diverse exhibits and programs. A partial list of past clients includes the following: Sea World of San Diego, Sea World of Florida, the National Zoo, the Lowry Park Zoo, Pt. Defiance Zoo, the Great Plains Zoo, the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, and Scripps Aquarium.
