Earth Day, which began in 1970, is now celebrated by millions of people worldwide. This year is its 35th anniversary, and around the world, hundreds of thousands of nongovernmental organizations, governments, teachers, and faith-based groups, among others, are making plans to declare that they are part of something extraordinary: a worldwide movement to protect our planet, our children, and our future...This Earth Day, hundreds of major events will take place around the world, in communities large and small, in classrooms, in parks and on beaches, in places of worship. From Kiev to Beijing, from India to Romania, from Africa to the Americas, we will demonstrate our diversity and our resilience. We look forward to your participation and working with you to make this Earth Day the beginning of a global effort to protect our children’s future.

International Migratory Bird Day
May 8, 2010

International Migratory Bird Day celebrates the incredible journeys of migratory birds between their breeding grounds in North America and their wintering grounds in Mexico, Central, and South America. The event, which takes place on the second Saturday in May each year, encourages bird conservation and increases awareness of birds through hikes, bird watching, information about birds and migration, public events, and a variety of other education programs. Join us in the celebration!

World Environment Day
June 5, 2010

The theme of this year’s World Environment Day (WED) is Many Species. One Planet. One Future. Rwanda’s capital Kigali will be the venue for the June 5 event billed as the biggest global celebration for positive environmental action.

“WED has become a dynamic and global grass roots expression of humanity’s desire to realize meaningful and positive environment change,” said Achim Steiner, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) executive director and UN under-secretary-general. “And Rwanda is an African nation that, despite big challenges, is seizing the multiple opportunities possible from green economic policies.”

World Ocean Day
June 8

Created in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, the World Ocean Day is an opportunity each year to celebrate our world's ocean and our personal connection to the sea. Whether you live inland or on the coast, we are all connected to the ocean. Take the time to organize or participate in activities that celebrate our world's ocean.

Education for sustainable development is a life-wide and lifelong endeavor which challenges individuals, institutions and societies to view tomorrow as a day that belongs to all of us, or it will not belong to anyone. UNESCO's Key Themes for the decade include: Environmental Protection, Economic Development, and Social and Cultural Development.
