Head of Education

Antonieta is a Pedagogy expert with more than 25 years’ experience and a strategic conservation education manager with 12 years’ experience in environmental education. Started her professional career as Assistant Professor at Lisbon University in teachers training degrees in Education. Her passion about how people learn led her to the master degree in Psycholinguistics in the area of learning acquisition and then to a PhD in Pedagogy.

She joined Lisbon ZOO in 2007 to assume the Educational Department, as Head of Education. She’s responsible for defining, developing, monitoring the implementation and evaluation of Lisbon ZOO Education Plan, formal (75.000 students/year) and informal Education (800.000 visitors/year). More than 50 different programs, dedicated from Kindergarten to High schooler’s and university students, teachers, families and other targets, exhibitions contents and messages to the general public and stakeholders. She’s also responsible for consolidation of institutional relations with the Portuguese Ministry of Education, for establishing and managing institutional partnerships, both national and international, for increasing educational policies and for creating innovative learning scenarios.

She’s also articulate with the Marketing and Commercial departments in the development and promotion of new sponsors, with the Zoological department in the development of new educational programs, behaviour and visitor’s studies research and with the Architecture department in the development of exhibit design.

Antonieta is an active member within the EAZA (European Association of Zoos and Aquaria).  She is the Vice Chair of the EAZA Education Committee since 2012.
